Sleep goes through two processes, REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement). A REM and NREM cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes, and most of the time is spent in sleep. The body rests during NREM. During REM, the eyes move quickly, but the body relaxes, and dreams occur during this time.

In sleep paralysis, REM sleep does not sync with the body or brain. In this the consciousness of the person remains awake but, in the state of sleep, the body remains paralyzed.

  • - Recurrent Isolated Sleep Paralysis: The experience of this type of paralysis can be frightening and long-lasting. Apart from this, a person can experience it many times in his life.
